Helping Parents Prevent Youth Substance Abuse

Oakland

The mission of the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities through substance abuse prevention, mental and physical wellness, and recovery support programs, the Alliance connects, strengthens, and mobilizes strategic partners to promote healthier communities.

The Alliance formed as an extension of the successful Coalition of Healthy Communities (CHC) network. CHC was founded in 1993 by four local coalition groups seeking to strengthen their existing collaboration through the creation of an umbrella organization. In 2003, CHC members, with the support of Oakland County’s Office of Substance Abuse Services, launched the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities to begin the next phase in Oakland County Prevention.

Today, our alliance has grown to include nineteen community prevention coalitions serving 50+ local communities thanks to the Oakland Community Health Network. Individuals and organizations who share our commitment to building healthy and drug-free communities can also become members.

Oakland County Treatment & Support Community Resource Guide

The best way to influence your child to avoid drinking or drug use is to have a strong, trusting relationship with him or her. When parents tell their children they strongly disapprove of youth drinking alcohol or using drugs, children are less likely to engage in using them. Begin talking to your children at an early age about the risks associated with drug and alcohol use.
