Helping Parents Prevent Youth Substance Abuse

Where and When?

Where and when you have these tough conversations is important.

To ensure your conversations are productive, make sure you have them at times and locations where you child is more likely to listen to you. Making sure the location is a nuetral location.

Examples of this include the car on the way to or from school, while making dinner, going for a walk, or while playing a game together.

Another important thing to remember is that boys and girls learn and process differently.

Boys tend to learn in more active ways. Use this to help you talk to your son. Start conversations while practicing a sport, while walking, or while playing a video game with them.

Girls learn and process more by direct conversation and discussing topics. Think about this when starting conversations with your daughter. sit down with your daughter around the table, go out to dinner, go shopping and talk.
