Helping Parents Prevent Youth Substance Abuse

Caught Off Guard?

A nightmare for parents….what do I say when my child asks me if I abused alcohol or drugs at their age.

Knowing how to answer can be tricky. The key is to be honest and focus on your expectations for your son or daugther.

While being honest, share why you chose to do drugs, but as with conversations about sex, your child doesn't need the specific details. You can be general and not give your child more information than they ask for.

Once you've answered the questions, turn the conversation back to what you want for them. An example might be, “Everyone makes mistakes and trying drugs was one of my biggest mistakes ever. I’ll do anything to help you avoid making the same stupid decision that I made when I was your age.”
